In June, 2004, I got a call from a concerned citizen of Princeton who discovered snapping turtle eggs laid in a pile of top soil. After carefully removing them from the property, I brought them home and I am trying to hatch them. To this date, 15 of the 23 are still viable. Watch this site in late August or early September to see if our eggs hatch.
We are sad to report that the eggs laid by a Three-toed box turtle after mating with a Ornate box turtle were not viable. While they belong to the same genus (Terrapene), they are classified as different species (carolina vs. ornata) so their progeny were unlikely to be viable.
